YOUR DIFFERENCES ARE YOUR SUPERPOWERS
Dear Reader,
WHAT IF I TOLD YOU THAT YOUR DIFFERENCES ARE YOUR SUPERPOWERS?
What if I told you that the things that make you different from everybody else are not a mistake, but are in fact your strengths and are the very things worth celebrating? Would you believe me? Would it change the way you viewed yourself and the world?
Too often we are deceived into believing that there is a particular way to fit into society, that we must stick to our acquired lanes and fit perfectly into our assigned labels and boxes. But, what if I told you that WE WERE NEVER MEANT TO FIT?
Audre Lorde once said that: “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognise, accept and challenge those differences”. The problem is not who or what we are, it is how we integrate our authenticity with that of others. How we coexist in a world with lives so different to our own. To believe that there is a superior way of being in this society and that we must change who we are to fit desired norms; disregards us as individual human beings who were born to bloom into the very things that make us stand out.
Now, don’t get me wrong, being yourself in a world that is constantly telling you otherwise is not always easy or safe. But it is YOU. And YOU deserve to exist, just as you are. We cannot always control how the world reacts to us, but we can control how we react to us and how we react to the world. Seek beauty where you are told to see doubt, seek strength where you are made to feel weak, and seek love in the very things that you are told to change. Because once you realise the POWER of your truth, what the world thinks of us becomes insignificant in comparison to the force within us.
Food for thought:
1. What are your differences (superpowers)?
2. What challenges do you face by having these differences (superpowers)?
3. How can you overcome challenges to be able to embrace and celebrate who you are?
4. How can you embrace and celebrate the differences in others?
5. Like any good superhero, how can your superpowers be used to make this world a better place?
Take away poem:
We all have something different that we were born to give this earth,
a mission, a purpose, a reason for our worth.
Thus, it is crucial that we share our distinctive wealth,
by being who we really are – being our authentic self.
Yet, sometimes it is hard when who we are doesn’t fit
and people may challenge you and tell you to quit.
But just because they tell you to sing their normal song,
it doesn’t mean they are right; it doesn’t mean you’re wrong.
It’s not always easy to be what feels right,
but maybe it is your SUPERPOWER, to bring these things to light.
I urge you to find your superpowers and hold them to your chest,
embrace them, explore them and never let them rest.
You’re beautiful, you’re worthy and were not born to hide,
So be your own superhero and lead from inside.
Stay extraordinary,
XOXO
